In Marshall County, Indiana, a small town says it’s expecting a large turnout when Union Pacific’s legendary Big Boy No. 4014 pulls in for a whistle stop next month. In a Facebook post, the Town of Argos said based on “the buzz already surrounding this” they’re anticipating visitors from well beyond the area. Union Pacific Railroad says its famed Big Boy, the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, is heading to the East Coast as part of a historic coast-to-coast tour to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary – and the journey includes stops for the first time in Indiana, specifically northern Indiana.
There will be some major public display events along the way, but Union Pacific says rail fans will also be able to see the famed machine at whistle stops, generally 15- to 30- minutes long, including one in Argos, about a half hour east of North Judson, June 5, 2026. There will be another in northwest Indiana July 16, 2026, in Knox.
The rail company said the eastern leg of the tour will operate across the Norfolk Southern network, marking a historic collaboration between the two railroads and starts May 25, 2026, from Cheyenne, Wyoming. According to the latest information, the rail company schedule says the locomotive is expected to arrive at the Michigan Street crossing in Argos, Indiana, on Friday June 5, 2026, at 2:15 PM Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) and depart at 2:45 PM EDT.
