In Valparaiso, the Kankakee Valley REMC Junior Board of Directors invites the public to a Day of Community Giving Saturday, May 30, 2026, at the Porter County Fairgrounds. As part of the Kankakee Valley REMC Junior Board program, students develop leadership skills and teamwork by planning and completing community service projects. This year, both the 2025 and 2026 Junior Boards are coming together to expand their impact with multiple events.
The day will feature a Suicide Prevention Walk/Run organized by last year’s Junior Board, and funds raised through registration fees will benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention-Indiana Chapter. This initiative holds personal significance for many of the students, who have witnessed the impact of suicide in their community and wanted to raise awareness while promoting mental health support, a news release said. The 2026 Junior Board will host a cornhole tournament and car show, with proceeds benefiting the Play For Jake Foundation, an organization that raises awareness and provides education for parents and youth about the dangers of undetected heart conditions.
Advance registration is encouraged for all events. Event check-in for the walk/run will begin at 9:00 a.m., with the race starting at 10:00 a.m. Registration is $20, and participants who register in advance will receive an event t-shirt. The car show will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. CT, with an entry fee of $15 for advance registration. The cornhole tournament will begin at 11:00 a.m., with team entry fees of $20 in advance. Prizes will be awarded to winning participants in both the car show and the cornhole tournament.
Kankakee Valley REMC says this collaborative effort reflects its ongoing commitment to the cooperative principle of Concern for Community. “This event is more than just a fundraiser, it’s an opportunity for our community to come together, support one another, and make a difference,” said Amanda Steeb, director of marketing & communications for KV REMC.
