In Michigan City, the new 11th Street Station building and adjacent parking structure went into operation Wednesday June 18 2025. The South Shore Line says the opening marks the completion of a significant milestone in the Double Track Northwest Indiana project. The commuter line says the parking structure holds over 540 spaces, including over 400 priority spots for passengers Monday through Friday from 6 am to 2 pm.
The station building has a seating area, restroom facilities, and attractions like an exhibit showcasing the history of the South Shore Line and an interactive model train set display. The station’s platform has been in use since early 2024. Work continues on the adjacent Franklin at 11th Street Station development. Economic Development Corporation Michigan City says the high-rise mixed-use project includes more than 220 apartments, retail space, co-working café, dog park, and more.
“This is all about partnerships, perseverance and community spirit that have made this project possible,” said Michigan City Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch. “Thank you to so many who had the vision and early commitment to make this project possible and our residents who have endured a lot of construction. Thank you for your patience, support and engagement, which have helped change this project into something truly reflective of our community.”
“Local and federal officials came together with one goal in mind: optimism for our future. Our future begins on these railroad tracks, and as we lay these tracks, we learn that what we are developing are the relationships and the bridges that show us we can do almost anything,” said Indiana Congressman Frank J. Mrvan.
