UPDATE: The Salvation Army Expands Response to Northwest Indiana Storms
The Salvation Army is expanding its disaster response in Northwest Indiana in the wake of severe storms on August 11. The Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) team is continuing to distribute water and food to residents in La Porte and Porter counties in a coordinated effort to assist households still without power or access to food and water. On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, The Salvation Army of Porter County served meals from the City of Portage’s centralized feeding site at Portage High School, located at 6450 E Highway 6. They provided dinner to 575 adults and 487 children and anticipate even greater need today.
“In the aftermath of one of the largest storms in Northwest Indiana’s history, the Porter County Salvation Army partnered with Portage High School to serve sandwiches, water, chips, and snacks to residents impacted by the storm,” reported Captain Jim Prichard with The Salvation Army. “We are especially grateful to Cappos for donating pizza and sandwiches, and to the Portage Police Department and United Way for providing a charging station and coordinating standby support. When neighbors come together like this, recovery becomes a shared effort, and no one has to face it alone.”

• The Salvation Army La Porte Corps 5 p.m.

In La Porte County another 350 residents were provided with food and hydration on Wednesday. Sack dinners were distributed at The Salvation Army Michigan City Corps, located at 1201 Franklin Street. An EDS mobile feeding kitchen (canteen) was also deployed to bring supplies out into storm-damaged neighborhoods in and around La Porte.
The Salvation Army’s disaster response will continue to evolve as resources become available and community needs change. The Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) team is distributing water and food to residents in La Porte and Porter counties in northwest Indiana in a coordinated effort to assist households still without power or access to food and water. The response is being coordinated at The Salvation Army Michigan City Corps, located at 1201 Franklin Street. Food is being gathered and prepped at the corps before it is sent out for distribution.
The City of Portage has opened a centralized feeding site at the Portage High School Field House, located at 6450 E Highway 6. The Salvation Army was on site Wednesday night offering dinner, snacks, water, and charging stations, and the team will be back on Thursday August 13 2026 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to continue serving area residents.
An EDS mobile feeding kitchen (canteen) has also been deployed to bring supplies out into storm-damaged neighborhoods in and around La Porte last night and today Thursday August 13 2026. At least 300-400 meals were being served Wednesday evening between Portage and La Porte.
