In northwest Indiana, the Lake County Sheriff’s Department is warning of dangerous conditions at local bodies of water and this morning Monday February 23, 2026, said, “Recent warmer temperatures in the Calumet Region have depleted the thickness and stability of the ice shelf covering all area lakes and ponds; which has created a clear and present danger for humans and pets” a news release said, urging everyone to stay off the ice. On Sunday February 22, 2026, the Lake County Sheriff’s Dive Unit, with aerial surveillance provided by the department’s Drone Unit, completed its second ice dive training session of 2026. Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez, Jr., also said they would like to thank the Lynwood, Illinois Fire Department for allowing access to their lake facility for this important seasonal public safety training event.
