In Porter County, Sheriff Jeff Balon announces the creation of the Porter County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit. Sheriff Balon says its primary responsibility will be to provide a police presence for safe watercraft operations in Lake Michigan during heavy boating days and it will work closely with marine units from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and U.S. Coast Guard. He says donations made it possible to purchase a previously owned watercraft from the Indiana DNR at a very reasonable cost to establish the unit, and Porter County Sheriff’s Police were able to secure a grant from the DNR to pay for off-duty Sheriff’s Officers to patrol the Lake Michigan shorelines. Sheriff Balon also sent out a thank you to the Portage Port Authority for providing a slip for the new Marine Unit to be stationed.
