Photos: Infamous Defendants Who Represented Themselves Photos: Infamous Defendants Who Represented Themselves Waseem Daker was sentenced on Oct. 1, 2012 to life in prison plus 47.5 years for the 1995 murder of flight attendant Karmen Smith and the repeated stabbing of her 5-year-old son, Nick. Daker acted as his own attorney, grilling both Nick Smith – now a young man – and Karmen Smith's roommate, Loretta Spencer Blatz. Before being tried for Smith's murder, Daker served ten years in prison for stalking Blatz. A jury convicted Daker of murder late last month.
