US Steel is shuttering two of its oldest coke batteries at the flagship Gary Works plant as part of an overall company initiative to reduce costs. Coke batteries 5 and 7 were built in the 1950s. Published reports say the 120 affected workers are being reassigned elsewhere within the mill. US Steel is also shutting down their Hamilton Works steelmaking plant in Canada. Hamilton Works in Hamilton, Ontario, is one of two US Steel plants in Canada.
