Second American to Orbit the Earth Dies

He went to space May 24, 1962 -- the 2nd American to orbit the earth, but Scott Carpenter never flew in space again. ABC News reports Carpenter's flight was successful, til he landed 250 miles off course. Some NASA officials blamed Carpenter for mishandling the landing and he never flew in space again. Grounded after a motorcycle accident, Carpenter left NASA in 1967, and became an aquanaut - leading a number of underwater laboratory missions. The 88 year old was one of the last of the legendary Mercury astronauts.
