Illiana Opponents Urged to Speak Out

About a-hundred people attended a gathering in Lowell last night on the proposed Illiana Expressway, where local officials urged those who don't want the highway built to send that message to region planners –like those who are on the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC), who still has to approve it. The gathering at the VFW Post was hosted by State Representative Rick Niemeyer, Lake County Councilman Eldon Strong, and West Creek Township Trustee Harold Mussman.  A newly-released analysis in Illinois by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning contends the two-state project would cost much more than officials have projected. The report also suggests the value of the highway, that would connect I-65 in southern Lake County in Indiana to I-55 in Illinois, has been overestimated.
