In Gary, police are investigating a shooting death overnight. It's the seventh homicide in the city, and sixth fatal shooting, since the Fourth of July holiday weekend. The Lake County Coroners office reports 27-year-old Christopher Hughes of Gary sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead in the 19-hundred block of Connecticut Street at 3:30 this morning. Gary officials have reportedly asked the Governor for assistance from Indiana State Police to combat the recent surge in violent crime. This morning's shooting death marks the 29th homicide in the city this year. Last year, Gary had a total of 43 homicides.
In October 1995, then-Governor Evan Bayh deployed fifty state troopers to Gary, in response to a request from then-Mayor Thomas Barnes to fight the city's rising murder toll. There were more than 130 homicides recorded in the city that year.
