Merrillville FD Considers Green Roof

The idea of the green roof continues to grow. In Lake Station the city's new municipal building that opened in the Fall of 2011 features a living roof that absorbs and filters rainwater and helps insulate the building. In nearby Merrillville, the fire department is now looking at the possibility of planting a green roof at Fire Station Number One on West 73rd Avenue to provide a place where firefighters could grow vegetables for themselves. It would also reduce stormwater runoff, and give crews a place to stay active by gardening when not responding to any calls for service.
