A Lake County judge has sentenced a Highland man to 55 years in prison in the shooting death of his girlfriend early last year. 27-year-old Douglas Smith was convicted of murdering 28-year-old Jacqueline Williams. The judge reportedly said the trial indicated the killing was a case of if not for the use of alcohol and the presence of the weapon, the tragedy may not have occurred. Police in Highland said they believe the victim was shot during an argument after the couple came home from a bar.
