Michigan City Police are urging residents to stay off the ice shelf at Washington Park, as it is not safe. Police officials report even though it looks solid, it isn't, as air pockets and unfrozen areas have made the ice unstable and therefore, unsafe to walk on. Authorities say the water underneath is icy cold, and a person walking on the ice shelf could fall through a thin spot, possibly causing injury, or even death.
