Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller is sending out a special thanks to a long-time police officer from just over the state line. Miller says the Chicago policeman, who was off-duty at the time, did not see the recent purse snatching but witnessed the suspect run to the alleged getaway vehicle, recognized something was wrong, and contacted Hammond dispatch with vehicle description, plate and direction of travel – and Hammond officers were able to intercept and make the arrest. Miller says he'll be sending a letter to the officer's supervisors commending his actions. The suspect, a 19-year-old man from Merrillville, was charged Saturday with Felony Robbery.
