The site of a one-million dollar Environmental Protection Agency dredging project in Gary, removing decades of accumulated sediment, will be getting some help from the people of Gary. The Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority has received a 351-thousand dollar grant for stormwater management around the Marquette Park Lagoon, which will be used to create a conservation corps to implement green stormwater best management practices. Lauren Riga, Green Urbanism and Environmental Affairs Director for the City of Gary and the Gary Stormwater Management District, says the project will employ four unemployed graduates of the Brownfield Training Program, and a community kick-off meeting will be held on February 28th to get Gary residents involved. Work on the project is scheduled to begin in March and is anticipated to run through November.
