Residents of several apartments were reportedly displaced Sunday evening after fire broke out in a nearly one-hundred year old building in downtown Whiting. Fire crews were still on scene hours after getting the call Sunday. There were no immediate reports of injuries. The Times today reports the three-story structure at 119th Street and Sheridan houses a dress and events shop and several apartments. Officials say the shop was not occupied at the time of the fire. Two other buildings just to the east reportedly sustained smoke and water damage, and three buildings to the north and across an alley, the Times reports, were evacuated as a precaution. No word on possible cause at this hour.
