State Won't Recognize Recent Same-Sex Marriages

Same-sex marriages performed around the Region and the state in the hours and days after a federal court overturned Indiana's ban on gay marriage are not to be recognized by state agencies. The directive by Governor Mike Pence applies only to state services and agencies that report to the Governor's office. Late last month a federal judge struck down the state's ban on same-sex marriage, and two days later a federal appeals court put that order on hold after the state requested a stay during an appeal. Pence's office also said agencies will continue to recognize the out-of-state same-sex marriage of two Munster women, as directed earlier by a separate court order. One of the women is terminally ill.
