Eight total tornadoes have now been confirmed within the National Weather Service Chicago County Warning Area, all embedded within severe winds, including two in northwest Indiana and one that traveled into the Region Monday night. One of the local twisters was southeast of Lowell, and likely began in a field west of Harrison Street and tracked east-northeast to near I-65 about 10:45 pm, forecasters say.  [Photo above showing damage to silo southeast of Lowell/photo courtesy National Weather Service Chicago]

Another was in and near DeMotte about four minutes later, and meteorologists say it cannot be conclusively ruled out that more than one tornado touched down along an eight-mile damage path. Additionally, near Lowell, straight-line winds were estimated at 100-to-110 miles an hour, about the same as the tornadoes. Near Grant Park in Kankakee County, Illinois, just a little over the state line, the National Weather Service says one homeowner reported the common freight train sound associated with tornadoes, and also said her ears 'popped' as a tornado passed. That tornado path continued into Lake County, Indiana, before ending west-southwest of Lowell.  There were three tornadoes confirmed in the Grant Park area.
Meteorologists say all the Chicago-area and Lake and Jasper County tornadoes were rated EF-1 on the intensity scale.  For more info here is a link to the National Weather Service Chicago website page on June 30th storm damage:   http://www.crh.noaa.gov/news/display_cmsstory.php?wfo=lot&storyid=103173&source=0
