Mother Nature was on the side of about 87 Indiana University Health La Porte and Starke colleagues on Friday, who teamed up for the annual Day of Service to improve parks. With sunny weather and temperatures in the 80s, the colleagues were able to complete more than 270 combined hours of work. The day was part of a state-wide effort among all IU Health entities to help address the growing risk of obesity in our communities. At Kesling Park in La Porte, 56 IU Health La Porte Hospital volunteers stained all the dugouts at the ball fields, installed exercise equipment, and installed pet waste stations inside the park.

“We want to make sure that we give back to our community. We are really blessed to live in La Porte with all of our parks and recreational facilities – between the lakes, and parks and walking trails. It’s just our way of encouraging folks to come out, use the parks, stay healthy and stay fit. We had a gorgeous day to do it,” said G. Thor Thordarson, president and CEO at IU Health La Porte Hospital.

“All of our colleagues out here are doing our best to beautify the park and make it a place where everyone can feel comfortable coming for recreation and fun, and we are happy to do this work on behalf of IU Health for the community,” said Craig Felty, president and CEO of IU Health Starke Hospital.
