The fate of a number of Gary's public schools could be decided this afternoon. The School Board is expected to take a vote on a proposal to close Brunswick and Webster Elementaries, the Lincoln Achievement Center, the Watson Academy for Boys instead of Bailly Preparatory Academy as suggested earlier, and decide whether to close Dunbar-Pulaski Middle School or Lew Wallace STEM Academy, formerly Lew Wallace High School. A earlier suggestion was to close Dunbar-Pulaski and turn Lew Wallace into a city-wide middle school for grades seven through nine with a wing for a freshman academy. The district is facing a multi-million dollar deficit heading into the 2014 academic year. Major repairs in heating systems and otherwise are anticipated at some buildings in the district.
