LaPorte Readies for Operation Clean-Sweep Week

The City of La Porte is geared up for its second annual code violation sweep set from Monday, April 28 to Friday, May 2, 2014.  Operation Clean-Sweep will be a collaborative effort with the police, code compliance and engineering departments, who will go through La Porte and tag as many code violating junk vehicles and rubbish as possible. Inspectors will be looking for violations such as junk vehicles, vehicles parked on the grass, brush piles, graffiti, missing house numbers, trash can violations and refuse such as old tires lying on the lawn.  Police say the purpose of the sweep is to educate residents, not punish them, and that all residents will be given a chance to address issues.. Each house in violation will receive a warning tag that includes an explanation of the violation(s) and how much time the owner has to correct it. If corrections are not made, fines may be issued.  The event is being coordinated to precede the city’s annual spring cleanup, so residents can dispose of violation items afterward.  La Porte Police say the event's launch was very successful in 2013, a sweep that netted more than 500 tons of rubbish and 75 junk vehicles for disposal. Questions on the sweep can be directed to the Office of Code Enforcement at (219) 362-2327.
