The City of East Chicago is planning to discuss at a workshop meeting today whether or not to pledge funds to extending the South Shore line eight miles south, from Hammond to Dyer. East Chicago is the largest city in Lake County yet to decide on committing funds toward the proposed Westlake Corridor commuter rail project, which is estimated to cost about 571-million dollars. Construction could begin in about six years, with the first trains running on the new line about three years later.
