Police in Michigan City have obtained a fully armored vehicle from the US military. The Times reports the nearly 800-thousand dollar, Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle, can hold up to a dozen officers and was free as part of the US government program that gives away surplus military vehicle. Police report the 40-thousand pound vehicle can be utilized in a variety of ways, including as a shield for officers during a drug raid, to reach motorists in emergencies when traditional vehicles are unable to retrieve them, and can be driven up to the front door of a barricaded home to better position officers to subdue a gunman and give hostages someplace safe to escape to that is close-by.
