Police Respond to a Fatal Traffic Accident in Whiting

A 12 year-old Whiting boy, who witnesses say was attempting to cross a busy Whiting street, was reportedly struck and killed by a semi truck.  Indiana State Police at the request of the Whiting Chief of Police are investigating the incident that occurred at 3:15pm Wednesday afternoon near the intersection of Indianapolis Blvd. and 119th St.  According to reports, officers arrived at the scene to find a young Hispanic male who had reportedly been struck and killed by a north bound semi.  Lake County Coroner, Merrilee Frey says the victim, identified as 12 year-old Angel Villafuerte of the 1200 block of Euclid Ave., sustained blunt force trauma and was pronounced dead at 4:10 p.m.  A semi truck and driver of interest were located and stopped by Whiting officers a few miles from the scene and is currently being detained by the state police. State police detectives from the Lowell Post, as well as crash re-constructionists, and officers with the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division were still on scene as several hours after the crash which closed Indianapolis Blvd.   At this time no arrests have been made in the case.
