Indiana State Police say a 45-year-old Rensselaer man and his young son and daughter were killed in a crash on I-65 shortly after 11:30 Monday night. Troopers say a preliminary investigation indicates the driver of an SUV failed to slow for traffic that was slowed due to a previous hazmat crash and struck the rear of a semi tractor-trailer. Police say the impact killed 45-year-old Dr. Mallik Chaganti of Rensselaer and two children in the vehicle. Police say a third passenger, a young boy believed to be Chaganti's son, had to be extricated and was transported to Jasper Memorial Hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities say the driver of the semi that was hit was not injured. Troopers say the box trailer was loaded with over 28-thousand pounds of apples. Police say the investigation into the crash is continuing. [Photo/Indiana State Police]
