New Fire Stations Planned in Schererville, Portage

The city of Portage is working to revitalize its downtown, and part of that will include a new downtown fire station. Fire Chief Tom Fieffer told us during a recent Region Newsmakers interview that they're early in the planning stages, but plans are to build the new one just up the street and to the east on Central Avenue. It will replace Station 3, the one at Portage City Hall.  He said they're hoping to break ground this Fall, possibly September or October, and possibly putting the station into service late Summer or early Fall of next year. You can hear our Region Newsmakers interview with Portage Fire Chief Tom Fieffer here at our website.
In Schererville, the town is eyeing an area of land near US 30 and Janice Drive as the possible site for a new fire station on the west side of town. The new station would include an adminstrative center and living quarters. Today's Times reports the department has outgrown their current facilities.
