Gary Mayor Supports S Shore Expansion Funds

The Mayor of Gary is officially on board with committing funds to the proposed South Shore expansion. Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson says she will ask the Gary City Council to approve setting aside twenty-percent of the city's share of a new Lake County income tax starting in 2016 toward extending the commuter rail eight miles south to Dyer, and 100-thousand dollars next year, as long as money is also made available for improvements along the existing South Shore route and the expansion of bus service. Congressman Pete Visclosky had asked all 19 of the county's cities and towns to agree to pitch in, and the county, too, and to do so by March 31st, yesterday. Just over half have pledged funds for the project.
