Oil Discharged into L Michigan from BP's Whiting Refinery

The amount of oil that was discharged from BP's Whiting Refinery on Monday afternoon remains unknown. Indiana Department of Emergency Management Public Information Officer Dan Goldblatt told the Region News Team they first heard of the incident around 4:30pm. Goldblatt says BP Emergency Response contractors, the Indiana Department of Emergency Management, the EPA and the Coast Guard were on the scene Monday night and into this morning cleaning up everything.
The Times reports BP has stated a processing disruption occurred Monday night and some oily water found its way into the cooling water system, which was discharged into a cove located between the water treatment plant and the steel mill.
A large sheen was reported on Lake Michigan earlier this morning, but Goldblatt says it was no longer visible as of 8:30am. He says the EPA will be conducting an investigation into the incident.
