The Lake County Sheriffs Office reports over two-point-eight-million dollars in stolen vehicles and merchandise stolen from train cars have been recovered after an eight-month undercover investigation. Officials from CSX Railroad, the Specialized Crimes Unit and the National Insurance Crimes Bureau, assisted in the investigation, which pinpointed major thefts from railyards in the Miller area of Gary in Lake County and also Western Avenue and Bedford Park in the Chicagoland area. CSX and NICB report that on average close to 13-million dollars in vehicles and cargo are stolen per year in Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana. Lake County Sheriff John Buncich says the investigation points to an organized skilled crime network that is familiar with the railyards. So far the investigation involves nineteen suspects, over 150 cases and six total ongoing investigations into cargo theft. Officials have served search warrants to suspected residences and businesses around Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana as the investigations continue. [Photo/Karl Berner]
