Ex-Pastor Seeks Shorter Sentence

The former leader of First Baptist Church of Hammond, Jack Schaap is acting as his own attorney as he attempts to get his sentence overturned. The ex-pastor of the megachurch is serving a 12 year sentence in federal prison after pleading guilty in 2012 to interstate transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity. Published reports say a motion was filed in in US District Court in which Schaap claims his attorneys represented the likely length of his sentence in relation to the guilty plea as less than it was. He also contends his attorneys should have put forth mitigating factors during sentencing proceedings.
