A mile-and-a-half long stretch of Indianapolis Boulevard that travels back and forth through Hammond and Whiting between Schrage and Calumet Avenues is being rebuilt, with work expected to get underway sometime this Spring. The Whiting Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce got an update Thursday on the six-million dollar project. Among their concerns has been the possible impact on Whiting's Fourth of July Parade and the city's huge annual Pierogi Fest. Indiana Department of Transportation Deputy Commissioner Robert Alderman assured the group there will be no work on the 4th of July weekend and Pierogi Fest is also being taken into consideration.  Alderman said there are a number of provisions in the contract, to the contractor that gets the work, that outline specifics as they relate to those two events.  Officials also stressed the road would remain open throughout the work, which will include resurfacing, widening that will add parking spaces, and new decorative lighting – lights that have been agreed upon by both cities so they'll match.
