There is growing national effort to make today, March 13th, K-9 Veteran's Day. East Chicago Police Chief Mark Becker told the Region News Team law enforcement agencies have become more reliant on their K-9 partners because they are so valuable and can be trained in so many different aspects. Chief Becker says a K-9's keen sense of smell breaks down every particle, which is why they are so important in locating evidence.
Chief Becker says as valuable as the K-9's themselves are the K-9 handlers, who put an awful lot of time into training the dogs.
Search and Rescue dog teams worked tirelessly at Ground Zero and the Pentagon after 9-11, bomb sniffing dogs were utilized in Iraq and Afghanistan. Therapy dogs are in hospitals helping to heal our veterans and service dogs are now assisting those who have been left handicapped by the war.
K-9's in Indiana are considered police officers and are afforded the same protections.
