Federal charges have been filed against a convicted felon arrested on Friday in possession with a handgun. East Chicago Police Chief Mark Becker told the Region News Team members of the Region Stop Team were patrolling the Harbor Section of the city, in response to increased reports of violence, and while investigating a suspicious vehicle in the 35-hundred block of Block Avenue, an occupant of the vehicle exited the car and fled.
Chief Becker says officers pursued the suspect, 23 year old Chauncey Hackett Jr., who when apprehended was found to be in possession of a handgun and a further investigation revealed Hackett to be a felon who had previously been convicted on an obstruction of justice charge in connection to a murder case some years ago in East Chicago.
The case has been turned over to the ATF, who filed the federal complaint in US District Court in Hammond on Monday. To contact the Region Stop Team with tips, call (219) 398-COPS.
