A parking restriction policy used in Michigan City and South bend to aid in snow removal on city streets was adopted Tuesday in LaPorte. The City's Board of Works and Public Safety reports the policy, which begins tomorrow and continues for the next 30 days, affects vehicle owners who park on the street. On even numbered calendar days, vehicle owners are required to park on the even numbered side of the street according to house numbers. On odd numbered calendar days, vehicle owners are required to park on the odd numbered side of the street.
Officials report there will be a grace period from midnight to 6am daily where the parking restriction will not be enforced. A warning will be issued for first time violations and a second offense will result in a ticket being issued with a monetary fine. Subsequent violations will result in the vehicle being towed with an accompanying fine.
The policy was approved due to the unusual amount of heavy snowfall this winter which has many streets nearly impassable for motorists, school buses and emergency vehicles.
