Pelath: IN House GOP Says No to Privatization Review

A proposal to conduct a cost-savings review of all state contracts that involved privatization of services over the past decade and make sure that a similar study is part of all future privatization deals was rejected today in the Indiana State House by a party-line vote. State Representative Scott Pelath, of Michigan City, who put forth the proposal as part of Senate Bill 394, says, “it would have given Hoosiers the first real chance to see just how effective we have been since our state decided that privatizing taxpayer-funded services was the wave of the future.”
Pelath cited the 75 year lease of the Indiana Toll road to a foreign investor and having IBM Corp. handle most of the state's welfare services, which he called a, “complete disaster”, as the state's most notorious efforts of privatization.
Pelath says he believes the state needs to be more vigilant in making sure the public's interests are protected since it concern hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer's money and is disappointed these sediments are not being shared by those in charge.
