In Hammond, police say a man died after being shot in an officer-related shooting in the city's Hessville neighborhood Sunday night. Authorities say the shooting occurred in the 66-hundred block of Ohio Avenue after police and EMS responded to a domestic disturbance at about 8:45 pm. The investigation has been turned over to Indiana State Police, at the request of Hammond Police. State Police this morning said their preliminary investigation revealed that a 44-year-old man had allegedly stabbed his wife multiple times with a knife, and she was able to go to a neighbor to call for assistance. Officials say the man allegedly confronted and advanced on Hammond police with two large knives when one Hammond police officer shot him. The man, identified by the Lake County Coroners office as John Brown II, was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound at 9:46 pm Sunday night at St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, according to a news release from the coroner's office this morning. Troopers say Brown's wife was taken to Community Hospital in Munster with non-life threatening injuries. The Hammond Police Department will release the name of the officer at their discretion. This is an ongoing investigation, and Indiana State Police say no further information will be released at this time. After the investigation is complete it will be turned over to the Lake County Prosecutor.
