Valpo School Board Gets Feedback

About 250 people attended a Valparaiso School Board workshop Thursday night to get public input on the school system's next superintendent. Only comments on that topic were accepted at the meeting, but a number of people came out to talk about the board's decision last month to sign a contract with private firm Valparaiso-based Lumenus USA that would bring up to thirty tuition-paying students from China to the school this fall as seniors. Officials say comments on that topic would be officially heard at the February 20th board meeting.  Five community members have been appointed to assist the board in going through applications and interviewing candidates for the superintendent's job.  64-year-old interim superintendent Michael Berta is leaving after two years, after coming out of retirement to fill the post. Berta retired from Portage Township Schools in June 2012, and less than two months later he was asked to join Valparaiso.
