A woman was rescued from a house fire this morning in Hammond, in the 65-hundred block of Rhode Island Avenue, on the east side of the city. Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Margraf says the woman was initially taken to St. Catherine’s and then flown to Chicago as a precaution for smoke inhalation. Margraf says she may have suffered some minor burns, but from what he has heard she is doing very well.
Margraf says the woman was found inside the backdoor of the home. The fire caused significant damage to the home, which they believe may have originated in the bedroom, and the cause is undetermined. As a result of the fire, the woman's dog was found deceased and a home to the south sustained some melted siding. Crews got the call shortly before 6:30am.
