Indiana House Passes Business Tax Exemption

The Indiana House today approved a business tax exemption a lot of people are talking about.  State representatives have approved a measure that would give counties the option of exempting companies from paying the state's business personal property tax. The vote today (Thursday) was 63-to-33 in favor of House Bill 1001. Indiana Governor Mike Pence, who has asked lawmakers to phase out the business personal property tax, sent out a letter to all mayors in Indiana Wednesday saying he wanted to make sure a phase out of the tax would not “unduly burden local governments” and that he welcomed their feedback. Meanwhile, the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns has sent out a statement announcing a new coalition called “Replace Don't Erase” representing 16 statewide organizations seeking full replacement revenues in the event the business personal property tax is eliminated.
