Lawmakers Amend Marriage Amendment

The Indiana House has voted 52-43 to remove the controversial second sentence from the proposed amendment to ban gay marriage.  Legal experts said the wording had the potential to prevent employers from providing benefits to same-sex partners. The revised amendment reads "Only a marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Indiana" without this sentence: "A legal status identical or substantially similar to that of marriage for unmarried individuals shall not be valid or recognized." Monday’s decision could delay a voter referendum on House Joint Resolution 3, the official name for the measure. It's possible the full House will vote today on sending the revised amendment to the state Senate.
