A nearly 35 year old cold case has thawed a bit as the Lake County Sheriff's Office announced today charges have been filed in the death of Gary resident Linda Carol Martin. The Sheriff's Office reports DNA evidence was submitted to the national repository for DNA samples collected from inmates convicted of felony offenses which resulted in a match for 64 year old LC Strong, a former Gary resident, who is currently serving time in the Michigan Department of Corrections on a 1998 conviction for second degree murder.
Martin was found lying in the roadway, near the intersection of 23rd Avenue and Rutledge Street, in the early morning hours of February 21st, 1979. Sheriff John Buncich says the investigation continues and anyone with information regarding the case is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office.
