More than two-feet of lake effect snow in less than ten hours, white-out conditions and clogged traffic made for a very difficult situation on Lake County expressways Tuesday. The Indiana Department of Transportation says plows had difficulty keeping up with the amount of snow that was falling, and payloaders were sent in to help.
Traffic remains very slow on the Borman today with hard, snow and ice-pack in spots and 'washboarding' on the expressway as well as Cline Avenue.
Traffic was slowed to a crawl or stopped on I-80/94 and I-65 for much of the day as motorists encountered snow falling at a rate of three inches or more an hour. As a result of the clogged roadways, INDOT crews and Indiana State Police had difficulty accessing both the Borman and I-65.
As of this morning, Lake and Porter Counties remained under a Watch and Starke and Pulaski Counties were in an Advisory, according to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security's Travel Status Map (refresh map page to update): http://www.in.gov/dhs/traveladvisory/
