Food Bank of NW Indiana
The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana today announced that in 2013 they distributed over five-million pounds of food, the equivalent of over four-point-two million meals. Communications/Advocacy Manager Megan Sikes says unfortunately they do not see the need going down anytime soon, and with debate in Congress over possible cuts to SNAP benefits in the Farm Bill, she urges you to contact your legislators to let them know it is important to support hunger relief programs.
Sikes says in order to make a real difference in the fight against hunger in Lake and Porter Counties they would have to distribute over 17 million meals a year as there are over 106-thousand people going hungry at some point in the year in Lake and Porter Counties.
Sikes says you can help support the Food Bank through the Souper Bowl food drive, taking place now through February 14th and by participating in the Northwest Indiana Gives Day, an online giving day to raise funds for northwest Indiana non-profits, on February 12th.
