An investigation continues after two officers with the Porter County Sheriffs Police Department were among three people taken to area hospitals this morning after a fiery incident near Hebron. Police say a 48-year-old Hobart firefighter, on leave after police allege he threatened his wife with a gun last month, allegedly drove his van into his Hebron-area home this morning, and crews responded to put out fire that broke out involving the vehicle and the house. Multiple departments responded, and the fire was quickly struck.
Police say John Wall was taken by ambulance to a local hospital with severe burns to his face and hands and later transferred to Loyola Medical Center after he jumped back into the burning vehicle. Officials say the two officers were inside the house investigating a battery complaint against Wall, after his wife called police to state her estranged husband gained entry to the home, jumped her while she was asleep and battered and strangled her, when the incident occurred. The two officers were transported to an area hospital and treated and released for smoke inhalation, with one suffering minor burns to his forearm, There were no further injuries to the man's wife.
