Strack & Van Til Acquiring WiseWay, PayLow Stores

An announcement Tuesday that one well-known northwest Indiana grocery store is buying another. Officials say Strack and Van Til is acquiring seven WiseWay and PayLow stores – two WiseWays in Valparaiso, one in Hobart and one in Chesterton are expected to become Strack and Van Til stores, and the PayLows, two in Merrillville, one in Gary, will turn into Ultra Foods, reports say. The Valparaiso Police Department is announcing the retirement of one of their K-9s at the end of this year. Britta, a female German Shepherd, has been partnered with Officer Jason Hamilton since 2007. Police say Britta was trained in narcotic detection and tracking and assisted in numerous arrests throughout her career as a member of the Valparaiso Police Department. Rollover Tanker Crash at Toll Road Ramp

No one was injured but a rolled over semi on the entrance ramp to the Indiana Toll Road caused traffic to be backed up for hours on State Road 49. Indiana State police report at approximately 3:15 this afternoon. A semi pulling a tanker, driven by a 52 year old Gary man, was northbound on 49, when he made a left turn to enter the Toll Road entrance ramp too fast, causing the 70-thousand pounds of liquid truck wash to shift, which caused the semi and tanker to roll over. Monetary funds could prevent a undefeated Gary youth football program from competing in the Pop Warmer Super Bowl in Florida this weekend. Man Charged in Alleged Rape Stabbing

An 18 year old homeless man has been charged after officers found a female rape victim and a man with stab wounds at a home in Michigan City Monday. Michigan City Police report Rah-Shan Cherry was picked up Monday afternoon as a person of interest on an unrelated warrant, and officially charged today with one-count of felony aggravated battery and one-count of felony rape. Legislation to Eliminate Tax Loophole

An Evansville-area state lawmaker has filed a bill he says is aimed at eliminating a tax loophole in the state that allows illegal immigrants and other to wrongfully collect unearned tax refunds. IN Meningitis Cases at 59

The number of confirmed cases of fungal meningitis in Indiana is now just shy of 60. The Indiana State Department of Health today reports 59 cases linked to epidural steroid injection used primarily for back and joint pain, with the death toll remaining at six. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website, at last check there are over 500 cases and and nearly 40 deaths contributed to the outbreak in the U.S.

Teen Dies After St. John Crash

Lake County Sheriffs Police say a Lake County teenager died early this morning from injuries received in a crash involving a pedestrian and an automobile at 85th and Parrish Avenues in St. John shortly after 5:30 last night. A news release today says the pedestrian, identified as a 15-year-old St. John boy, was taken to a Dyer hospital with critical injuries, then flown to a Chicago hospital, where he passed away at 2:30 am. Man Attacked at EC South Shore Station

NICTD Transit Police say a man was stabbed and his car stolen as he was waiting for his wife to get off the train at the East Chicago South Shore Station Monday night.
