
An ex-banker and convicted tax cheat who told the IRS how his employer, UBS, helped thousands of wealthy clients duck U.S. taxes has just been awarded $104 million by the U.S. government, a sum his lawyers say is the largest payout ever for a whistleblower. Bradley Birkenfeld, who was released from federal prison six weeks ago, pleaded guilty in 2008 to helping American clients avoid paying federal income and other taxes to the IRS. As part of his plea, Birkenfeld confessed to helping businessman Igor Olenicoff conceal $200 million in assets and evade paying $7.2 million in taxes. ...

A private island in Ireland once owned by John Lennon and Yoko Ono is on sale for $384,000 or 300,000 euros. Before Lennon was killed in New York in 1980, he had plans to build a home on Dorinish Island in Clew Bay in the county of Mayo. He reportedly bought it for $2,700 or 1,700 pounds in 1967. Ono sold the 21-acre property, sometimes called "Beatle Island," to local farmers in 1984, Bloomberg reported. The current owners are reportedly selling the island because it is difficult to keep animals on it as they grow older....
